Taiwan Day 4: Yilan, Luodong Night Market

Wheeee yet another day gone! Today we moved from Taipei to the countryside town of Yilan.
Breakfast: some scones from the bakery near our hotel

And delicious QQ mochi bread from the same stall.
Left the hotel at about 9+ am and made our way to the bus station to catch the 10 15 bus to Yilan.
Waiting at the bus station hehe
After an hour and 10 minutes journey, we finally reached the bus terminal! Took a cab to the B & B that is to be our abode for the next 3 days: Full sweet inn
It looks so beautiful from the outside! Like some bungalow you would expect to find amongst the pages of some model house magazine. And the interior is just as wonderful ( I'll take more pictures in the days to come!)

They even have a see saw in the front yard!
The owners of the inn, a couple were really nice and friendly and they were so willing to help! It was as if we were really welcome guests in their house and not mere customers.
We decided to head to the Yilan Arts Cultural Centre while waiting for our room to be set up.
The shops along this picturesque street all represent some form of art or another (ranging from candy making to charcoal carving and anime)
But first we set off to get lunch at the food court!

Seafood hotpot
Pork chop set
Some dumpling soup set
The portions were quite huge! Luckily we shared so we were left feeling not so full. We then headed to 7 eleven to get drinks.

Left: Yam and Adlay milk (no idea what that is)  Right: Brown rice milk
These were delicious, and so filling! Probably extremely nutritious as well and could easily serve as a meal replacer. The brown rice one tastes like sesame somehow. Wish the seven elevens in Singapore could sell these T.T

Opera performance
Homemade candy popiah

This was quite nice! There was coriander and peanut shavings and the homemade candy along with the popiah skin that was probably homemade.
It rained halfway though :(
After we had enough of the place, we took a boat to the park near our inn!

View of the inn on our way back

My goofy family with mom photo bombing at the back
We got a beautiful afternoon tea set!! Consisting of a delicious chocolatey brownie that wasn't too sweet and studded with walnuts (and homemade to boot!) and a creamy milk pudding that was so rich and good. The fact that the presentation was amazing doesn't hurt either.
Another shot
Then we were led to our room! It was hands down one of the nicest B & B hotels I have been to. And it had two stories!!!
The bed looked so grand.
In fact the whole place looked so grand and immaculately put together. I wish this was my house for real.
After we rested a while and digested our afternoon tea, we set off to the famous Luodong Night Market! ( by cab)
Night market here we come!!!! (Again)
Mandatory cute dog. I've seen so many cute dogs here in Taiwan simply hanging out of people's handbags or being cradled in their arms like a child!
Dad headed to the first stall we came across selling scallion pancakes (which Luodong market is apparently famous for)
Thin crispy fried skin and bursting at the seams with scallions and beef. How they get the skin so thin never fails to amaze me!!
Another Luodong market speciality: red bean tapioca balls
The hot version served in a gingery broth, tauhuey and the tapioca balls.
The cold version with ice cream and jelly and beans! I preferred this to the hot version.
The tapioca balls are kept separate for the cold one so that they would not harden due to the lower temperatures!
A few steps later....
Pig's blood! Soft and melt in your mouth texture. I prefer the chewy glutinous rice version though heh.
Bawan! Saw the people next to us eating this and it looked good so we got one. Chewy glutinous rice skin stuffed with meat balls and garnished with bamboo shoots in a sweet sauce similar to that of the ahgei one.
And another few steps later....(actually just one stall away) POPIAH!
The skin made fresh on the spot: always the sign of a good popiah

Huge variety of fillings
Woman wrapping the popiah up at lightning speed!
The resulting wrap was so thick and despite it being loaded with ingredients, the skin still held its own and was soft and springy (unlike those prefrozen ones that tear apart at the first smidgen of sauce!!!)
This was the BEST popiah I've ever eaten thus far. Singapore's ain't got nothin' on this. There were two flavours, one wasabi and one chilli sauce and the wasabi one was amazeballs <3
All the ingredients in one!!! It was crunchy, soft, sweet and the contrasting textures of flavours made this so good.
Dad spotted people queuing up (always a good sign) so he joined the queue.
Some beef scallion wrap?
It was hot peppery and delicious but I was full and I found a hair in mine which kind of ruined the experience for me :(

People always look attractive eating
After a bit of wandering around, we came across this stall selling.... Stinky tofu fries!!! With quite a sizable queue.

Drenched in a tangy sweet sauce. So crispy and good!!!
We didn't manage to eat coffin bread today, nor the famous lamb soup so we'll probably be back another time( plus it was raining today so...)
On a side note: I can feel myself getting fatter by the day!!! Haha after this holiday I'm gonna be eating salads all day sigh :P
